There are a variety of open access models for accessing scholarly publications:

Open Access Journals

• No fee for access to final published work
• Author pays publication fee; some fees may be waived or subsidized
• Author retains copyright
• Use Directory of Open Access Journals to locate open access journals

Open Access “Hybrid Model”

• No fee for access to final published work
• Work is bundled with non-open access articles
• Author pays open access fee
• Author retains copyright
• Use Directory of Open Access and Hybrid Journals to locate journals that offer hybrid options

Delayed Open Access Journals

• Publisher allows for free access to entire issues of journals or select articles after a specified time period
• Publisher retains copyright

Subject Digital Repository

• No fee for access to a version of a published work, usually the final peer-reviewed manuscript version
• Author retains the right to post a version of the work to a subject digital repository
• Use Directory of Open Access Repositories to locate subject repositories

Institutional Digital Repository

• No fee for access to a version of a published work, usually the final peer-reviewed manuscript version
• Author retains the right to post a version of the work to a repository that collects the scholarly output of an  organization—in most cases, a university
• Use Directory of Open Access Repositories to locate institutional repositories

Laboratory or Personal Website

• No fee for access to a version of a published work, usually the final peer-reviewed manuscript version
• Author retains the right to post a version of the work to a laboratory or personal website

Compliance with this Policy is a statutory requirement and a term and condition of the grant award and cooperative agreement, in accordance with the NIH Grants Policy Stat

Specifics:

 1. The NIH Public Access Policy applies to all peer-reviewed articles that arise, in whole or in part, from direct costs ¹ funded by NIH, or from NIH staff, that are accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008.

2.  Institutions and investigators are responsible for ensuring that any publishing or copyright agreements concerning submitted articles fully comply with this Policy.

3.  The final, peer-reviewed manuscript includes all graphics and supplemental materials that are associated with the article. 

4.  Beginning May 25, 2008, anyone submitting an application, proposal or progress report to the NIH must include the PMC or NIH Manuscript Submission reference number when citing applicable articles that arise from their NIH funded research. This policy includes applications submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due dates.

Becker Library provides services to help WU (Danforth campus and Medical School campus) authors comply with the revised policy. Among these services include third party submitter services, locating journal publishers that will allow authors to comply with the revised policy, providing an addendum to use to retain the right to comply, to name a few.
