Interesting article:
Von Bohlen und Halbach’s “How to judge a book by its cover? How useful are bibliometric indices for the evaluation of “scientific quality” or “scientific productivity”?” includes a thoughtful review of bibliometric indices used to evaluate the performance of scientists and proposes two indicators for evaluating young scientists to correct for career length:
- Py as an indicator for productivity
- m index as an indicator for scientific quality
“. . . it is suggested that in case of evaluation, the m-index and Py should be calculated and these indicators should also be used in case of a bibliometric based evaluation, since all other indicators depend on the time a scientists spends in the field.” [p. 195]
