In the clinical setting of medical patients in the emergency department (ED), it is crucial to immediately categorize individuals according to their disease severity and determine both treatment priority and treatment location. Focusing on medical patients, a very heterogeneous population presents at the ED, representing a wide range of patients either with a defined acute illness or with decompensation of multiple chronic disorders. For this purpose, specific ED triage systems including the Australasian Triage Scale (Australia), Manchester Triage System (UK), Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (Canada) or Emergency Severity Index (USA) have been proposed and introduced. Moreover, various laboratory biomarkers are routinely used in medical patients in the ED. é 2012 The Association for the Publication of the Journal of Internal Medicine.
